When to use this receipt

Landlords and property managers give a rent receipt each time a tenant pays rent. Tenants can also fill one out and ask the landlord to sign it.

A receipt is especially important for cash and money order payments, which leave no bank record. Tenants often need receipts to prove rental history for a new lease or mortgage, or to claim a renter’s credit on state taxes where one exists.

Frequently asked questions

Are landlords required to give rent receipts?

It depends on the state. Several states require a receipt for cash payments or when a tenant asks for one. Check your state’s landlord-tenant rules.

Can a tenant make their own rent receipt?

Yes. A tenant can fill out the template and ask the landlord to sign it at the time of payment.

Does a bank transfer need a receipt?

A bank record already shows the payment, but a receipt still documents which rental period it covered. Many landlords send one by email for every payment.

How long should I keep rent receipts?

Landlords should keep them with their tax records, usually at least three years. Tenants should keep them for the length of the lease, plus some time afterward in case of a deposit dispute.
